He was born on 10 October 1887 in a Marathi Brahmin family in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. He was the son of Balvantrao Patvardhan and Parvatibai Patvardhan. He was married to Lakshmibai Patvardhan. Patvardhan was educated at the Fergusson College in Pune. He was a member of the Indian National Congress and participated in the Indian independence movement. He was also a member of the Constituent Assembly of India. Patvardhan was a great educationist. He founded the New English School in Kolhapur in 1915. He also founded the Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University in 1962. Patvardhan died on 12 January 1964 in Kolhapur. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1958.
